It was 1985 and I was working as a police officer in the town of Dixon in Solano County, California.
One summer afternoon, I answered a call at a small home to take a report of a theft from a garage. As I was speaking to the resident, we were standing in his backyard. I noticed a dog, who looked to be about 2 years old, locked in a small pen, jumping up and down, excitedly trying to get to us. I could see immediately he was a collie. I kept looking over at him. He was a big sable boy with a happy face. The man noticed me looking at him and asked, “do you know anyone who might want him?. We’re going back to Mexico and we can’t take him. I know he’s not full collie, but he’s pretty”. Well, I could tell by looking at him, he was a purebred collie.
I told the man, “I’ll take him. I’ll come back at 2pm when my shift is over and I’ll take him”. I don’t know if the guy believed me, but that’s exactly what I did. I went straight from the police department to his home and picked him up. The man told me, his name is “Sultan”.
Sultan went home with me that day, met my 6 year old daughter and lived happily ever after with us. He grew so old that in the end, I had to cook ground beef and rice for him every day because that was all his tired old stomach could tolerate. He died in 1999, a few months before my husband passed away.
To this day, I still think of Sultan as the best dog I ever had. And I had a K9 partner for 5 years!. Sultan was kind, gentle, a perfect guardian yet didn’t have a mean bone in his body. I still miss him to this day.
