December 21, 1872 to February 18, 1942

He was an american author, journalist, and dog breeder. He is perhaps best known for his beloved novels featuring collies. His kennel, Sunnybank (named after his family’s summer home), is well known in the collie world and his dog’s lines still exist in many pedigrees today.

“Lad: A Dog” featuring the most famous Sunnybank dog Lad, was his first book about dogs and was published in 1919.
