Who We Are
Collie Dog Owners was founded on February 27, 2002. The cause? Lisa, the site manager, was 19 years old and just experienced the death of her last childhood doggy companion - a smooth collie mix. After a week of searching for another dog, she ran into the most gorgeous sable / white rough collie at an all breed pet rescue in Columbia, South Carolina. That dog was named Rocky - and according to the shelter, came with the other collie onsite…his sable rough sister, Daisy.
That week, the two collies went home with Lisa, who knew nothing about the collie breed before that moment other than her Floppy had been a smooth collie. Determined to give them the best collie-fied treatment possible, Lisa searched the internet and scoured the bookshelves for access to collie specific information. Unfortunately, that was very hard to come by at that point in time, and most of the “collie” books she found only told general dog care information (something she already knew after having had mixed breed dogs her entire life).
Discouraged, she wondered if there was a way to bring the information to her instead. On a whim one night, she opened up an MSN forum group, with the apt title of “Collie Dog Owners” - and thus started the beginnings of what you see today. Over the next three years that group brought in vast knowledge resources from professional breeders, rescue workers, show handlers, judges, and journalists right along side of the most novice of collie owners. “Easy to access, detailed collie information” became the mission of Collie Dog Owners. In Ocotober, 2002, the site had grown to a point where Lisa felt it necessary to expand to a sister website to begin storing the vast collie knowledge - and CollieDogOwners.com was born.
The same month, www.CollieShop.com was opened to give the collie owning public a chance to own merchandise that promoted their love for this amazing breed. The CollieShop as it is affectionally known, contains over 100 unique collie themed designs such as “I like my Husband, but LOVE my Collie”, “I [heart] Collies!”, and “Collies are the Best Good Luck Charm” on 2000+ products including shirts, hoodies, tote bags, mugs, clocks, mousepads, and buttons.
In June, 2005, the original MSN Collie Dog Owners group was closed, but the main site has remained open all this time as a testament to the still strong mission Lisa has to provide collie owners with good quality, great quantity educational resources on the Collie.
