The most popular color of a collie is the sable & white as featured on the television, radio and book icon - Lassie. Although the rough sable coat is the most widely recognized, smooth collies can be sable white also.
In it’s basic form, this means the dog is brown and white. The browning is mottled throughout his head, with a white mane, then shades of browining beginning at the shoulderblades and extending down past the rest of the body. Along with the mane, undercarriage, feet and tip of the tail is usually white as well.
The brown shade can vary widely - from a light scruffy blonde to a deep mahogony, and every brown shad in between. The light yellowish red shade of Lassie is the shade you are probably most familiar with. Typically collies have brown motling of more than one shade throughout their coat.
