The Collie Coat

Rough and Smooth Collies are called that because of their visible outer coat. Both have the same inner downy undercoat. Although America considers this to be two varieties (rough and smooth) of the same breed (collie), other countries - especially in Europe - classify these as two separate breeds.

The rough collie’s downy undercoat is covered by a long, flowing coarse outer coat with a lion-like ruff around the neck, fur that feathers out on the back of the legs, flowing strands on the underbelly, a frill on their hindquarters, and a long, fluffy tail.

The smooth collie, although it’s undercoat is the same, is covered with a short, dense outer coat. Although not nearly as noticiable, he has the frill around the neck and fringe on his legs as well.

Both collie coats come in the same colors:

Sable White
TriColor
Blue Merle
White*
Phantom Merle (should not be bred)
Sable Merle (Blue eyes are disqualified)

(*Although it’s ok in America, White is not a recognized color in many parts of the world)
