Chicken bones, one of the most common bones fed to dogs off the table is also one of the most dangerous foods. Most bones that humans consume are small – and remember, a collie is a large dog. A normal male collie doesn’t hesitate to wolf down a small bit without taking a moment to chew. Small bones, which splinter easy, have sharp edges, and are swallowed fast by the large collie dog can cause fatal damage to the throat, esophagus, and even stomach. Furthermore, a small sharp bone could easily get lodged in a collie’s throat. If you feel like you must give your dog a bone because you think “that’s what dog’s eat” – then please go to your local butcher shop and get a large leg bone or another type of bone and your collie will have to stop and think about before gulping it down!

One Response to Of course I’ve always heard that dogs love bones. Is it safe to give my collie one?

I think your site is amazing, but I was looking for the answer to a spacific question. I hope you can help. We rescued a rough coat collie from a breeder. The puppy was 8 weeks old when we brought him home. He is blind in one eye.He is now almost 10 months. The problem we have is his hearding instinct. We have horses. If we would have known he would heard our horses all day long we would have found a home for him early on.We are now attached to him and he to us.We thought we could train him to stop or he would grow out of it or even get bored with it. But ,that is not the case. There is a fence line that he works all day . He respects the under ground fencing and does not enter the pasture but he will not stop barking at them and running up and down the fence all day. We had to put a bark collar on him and it has helped but not 100%. Nothing stops the running and aggressiveness when the horses come to the fence. Please help I don’t know how much longer we can take it. We love him he is amazing except with the horses. He has even been kicked and got up and started chasing them again. HELP!
