Have you ever been unfortunate enough to have a loving pet taken from you due to an unforeseen illness or accident? If you have then you understand the pain of losing that special pet in your life. If you have never lost a pet, then consider yourself warned by the fact that most owners will outlive their pets.

No person wants to lose their beloved friend and companion, under any circumstances. However some things simply cannot be seen ahead of time, and may warrant that you consider taking extra steps to insure your pet’s safety and their long healthy life. That extra step is called pet insurance.

So the question is should we bother getting pet insurance for our dogs, cats or other pets? Well, this all depends on how much you care about your pet, how much you can afford to spend, and which is more important to you.

You see, most pets will only live between 8-15 years on average, and could be stricken with any number of potential problems, such as diabetes, cancers, hip dysplasia, and the ever lurking chance of accidental injury. Because these problems are often quite costly to have treated by your veterinarian, there are companies out there that offer pet insurance plans to cover your pet during such an emergency.

As there are more then a handful of companies that offer pet insurance quotes and plans, you will be left to decide which company is best for you and your pet’s needs. Here is a brief list of several of the most readily available pet insurance carriers on the Internet:

• Veterinary Pet Insurance Company (VOI) – PetInsurance.com

• Pet Care Insurance Companies – PetCareInsurance.com

• Vet Insurance – VetInsurance.com

• Pets Best Insurance – PetsBest.com

Because pet insurance coverage will vary based on each company you will want to get multiple quotes. Check your local vet office to ask them if they are participating members of any pet related insurance. They should be able to provide you with more detailed information about costs for specific procedures as well, as many pet related illnesses and accidents can range into the thousands of dollars very easily. You should not be surprised by these costs, and you should know that they will only get higher in the years ahead.

The main thing to keep in mind is that you need to do your research when you are looking into pet insurance. You will need to know the potential risks for your cat or dog. If your dog is accident prone, then assume that the risk of an accident is much higher and could cost you much more in the long run. Nobody wants to lose their pets to unforeseen accidents or illness, so take whatever steps you need to insure that your pet will be with you for a long time to come.
