Collie Rescue is a very wonderful cause to get involved in.
There are so many beautiful homeless collies out there because they are either
neglected and abused or their owners simply cannot take care of them anymore for various reasons. Don’t let bad things happen to our beautiful breed! Find a
local Collie Rescue shelter and become involved TODAY.

Call them and ask them what YOU can do to help them out!

It doesn’t take much, and it will help so many unfortunate collies.

What are some things you can do to help collie rescue?

  • Donate a portion of your money.
It doesn’t have to be a lot! Just set aside a spare change jar to empty
your pockets in. You’d be surprised at how fast it will add up!

  • Donate a portion of your time.
Visit local collie rescue groups and ask them what you can do to help. Most of them are always looking for helpers to walk collies, brush them, play with them, or even clean up the shelter. There are plenty of things you can do if you just ask!
  • Donate a portion of your car. When Collie Rescue groups hear of a collie in need, they may not always be located
close enough to go get the collie. That’s where YOU can help! Let your local Rescue know that you would be willing to
go pick up collies in need and deliver them to the shelter.
  • Donate a portion of your home. There are so many collies in need, but not that much space for shelters to house them
in permanently. That’s when Foster Homes are used. Just as children are sometimes put into foster care before they are adopted, Rescue groups use foster care to give collies in need a home atmosphere while they are
recuperating from their abuse or just waiting on a family to adopt them.

The Montana Collies

Halloween - a time when evil is celebrated and the scary is brought to life. On Oct. 31, 2002, a border patrol stopped a semi truck crossing the border between Canada into Montana. When the back door was opened, he met evil face to face. Inside of the cabin were 165 Collies, 6 other dogs, and 10 cats all crammed together, matted and lying in each other’s waste. They were all sick and emaciated.

The drivers, a couple with a large breeding farm in Alaska was moving their animals to Arizona, were charged with neglect and had to await their trial. Meanwhile the collies were still considered their “property”. The Shelby, Montana city officials feared what would happen to the dogs, especially since the small town did not have the resources to care for so many sick animals.

After word spread, collie lovers around the country determined to give a good life to these poor animals. “Camp Collie,” was set up at the local fairgrounds, and one of the most massive rescue missions in history began. Veterinarians, trade professionals, and other people from all over came each day to walk, clean, water, feed, groom, comfort and care for these helpless animals. After months of delays, investigations, a hung jury, and a camp move to a nearby warehouse, a jury finally convicted the neglectful owners on all counts of animal cruelty. The dogs could finally be adopted out to new forever homes. On August 3, 2003, nearly a year after the horrible findings of that All Hallows Eve night, the last dog left Camp Collie II for his new home.

Collie Rescue - How the Collie Dog Owners Started

On Feb. 2, 2002, a smooth coated collie mix named Floppy Brown Ears passed away. He was the last remaining childhood pet of his 19 year old owner, Lisa. This was the first time Lisa had been without a dog since age three, and she wanted to get another one to help her through the grief. This tragic incident was the beginnings of what would become the Collie Dog Owners.

After a few days of searching, Lisa entered a local all-breed pet rescue shelter near home and was amazed to find the most beautiful mahogany male rough collie she had ever seen. The two instantly fell in love. A week after Floppy had passed away, 4 year old Rocky the mahogany rough collie and his rough sable sister, Daisy, came home to live with Lisa and her parents.

Although she had been surrounded by mixed breed dogs her entire life, these were the first purebred dogs she had ever owned. Determined to provide the best care for these beautiful creatures, Lisa scoured the internet to find information on the care of collies. Frustrated, she could find nothing. At that time there were hardly any centralized sites devoted to collies. On a whim, that same week she opened a new MSN “group” aptly named “Collie Dog Owners”, with hopes of having the information come to her instead. Within 4 months, 15 members had joined the message boards.

As the group grew, so did the purpose and focus of the Collie Dog Owners. In October, 2002, CollieDogOwners.com website was founded to expand on the information learned on the message boards. CollieShop.com, a store featuring hundreds of unique collie themed designs on thousands of products followed a few months later. At the time of it’s closing in June of 2005, the MSN message board group had grew to over 668 collie loving members worldwide. Sadly, on October 7, 2005, Rocky the mahogany rough collie and inspiration for the Collie Dog Owners passed away after a sudden stroke and a week in the hospital. His sister Daisy still misses her beloved brother and cries for him every time she sees a tennis ball (their favorite game).

In February, 2007, Collie Dog Owners turned 5 years old and marks the commitment of Lisa’s dedication to continually provide collie owners everywhere with easy to access information in one centralized site. It is interesting to note that nothing was ever known about the background of Rocky and Daisy except their birthday – February 2, the same day Floppy passed over the rainbow bridge.

A Tribute to those who have adopted "Rescue Collies"

My Master, My new Friend…

I would’ve died that day if not for you.

I would’ve given up on life if not for your kind eyes.

I would’ve used my teeth to tear if not for your gentle hands.

I would have left this life believing that all humans don’t care,
believing there is no such thing as fur that isn’t matted,
skin that isn’t flea bitten, good food and enough of it,
beds to sleep on, someone to love me, to show me I deserve
love just because I exist.

Your kind eyes, your smile, your gentle hands,
your big heart saved me.

You saved me from the terror of the pound,
soothing away the memories of my old life.

You have taught me what it means to be loved.

I have seen you do the same for other dogs like me.

I have heard you ask yourself in times of despair why you do it
when there is no more money, no more room, no more homes.

You open your heart a little bigger, stretch the money a little
tighter, make just a little more room…to save one more like me.

I tell you with the gratitude and love that shines in my eyes
in the best way I know how, reminding you why you go on trying.

I am the reason.

The dogs before me are the reason, as are the ones who come after.

Our lives would’ve been wasted, our love never given.

We would die if not for you.
