Collie Rescue is a very wonderful cause to get involved in. There are so many beautiful homeless collies out there because they are either neglected and abused or their owners simply cannot take care of them anymore for various reasons. Don't let bad things happen to our beautiful breed! Find a local Collie Rescue shelter and become involved TODAY.

Call them and ask them what YOU can do to help them out!
It doesn't take much, and it will help so many unfortunate collies.

What are some things you can do to help collie rescue?

  • Donate a portion of your money. It doesn't have to be a lot! Just set aside a spare change jar to empty your pockets in. You'd be surprised at how fast it will add up!

  • Donate a portion of your time. Visit local collie rescue groups and ask them what you can do to help. Most of them are always looking for helpers to walk collies, brush them, play with them, or even clean up the shelter. There are plenty of things you can do if you just ask!

  • Donate a portion of your car. When Collie Rescue groups hear of a collie in need, they may not always be located close enough to go get the collie. That's where YOU can help! Let your local Rescue know that you would be willing to go pick up collies in need and deliver them to the shelter.

  • Donate a portion of your home. There are so many collies in need, but not that much space for shelters to house them in permanently. That's when Foster Homes are used. Just as children are sometimes put into foster care before they are adopted, Rescue groups use foster care to give collies in need a home atmosphere while they are recuperating from their abuse or just waiting on a family to adopt them.

A True Story of Collie Rescue

As told on our message boards by group member Jaymz ...

The collie rescue I belong to is the Minnesota-Wisconsin Collie Rescue (www.mwcr.org), and so far this year we have placed over 65 collies in forever homes.

This week I participated in a rescue that illustrates just one of the situations we encounter. The whole story of "Will" the collie is on our home page, and I encourage you to visit it and read about this beautiful, tri-color male who went through more than any dog ever should. I will quote his story here, from our web site, but I was the one who initially picked him up from the good samaritan woman who found him one rainy night. In spite of being malnourished, shot, beaten and caged, he calmly rode home with me in my pickup truck, his head in my lap. He loved for me to scratch between his ears and would "bat" at my hand when I stopped. In spite of what he had been thru, he exuded a calm, class and nobility that just melted your heart.

If you visit our site, there is a button you can click to contribute to his vet care (which will be expensive), either by check, credit card or PayPal. Any help is appreciated, but also, if you love collies and want to help, get involved in a local collie rescue. It is very rewarding and there are lots of ways you can help.

Will's Story follows below:

"Will" is a 2 or 3 year old intact male tri-colored Collie. He came to us via a good Samaritan who took him in after finding him standing between two houses in the pouring rain. He was very thin, full of burrs, weak, and had what appeared to be a large scab on the back of his head.

Within 24 hours of learning about him, MWCR was able to get Will into our custody and to a veterinarian. There it was discovered he has worms, is more than ten pounds underweight, has been chewing on bars (meaning he'd been caged) and may lose his upper front teeth due to the damage, has been shot (1 piece of birdshot was removed from his back), and has a large fresh wound (about a ½ inch hole on top of a large welt) on the back of his head.

Will was given a few days to begin his recovery before returning to the vet for x-rays of his head. The x-rays revealed 9 additional pieces of birdshot throughout his body. They also revealed that there is a hole in his skull about ½ inch tall and 1 inch wide. This means that someone hit this poor boy on the back of the head with a blunt object (i.e. a hammer, a shock stick, etc.). He was most likely hit and then left for dead. We renamed him Will because he has been so strong-willed and had to be in order to make it this far.

Will is continuing his recuperation at his new foster home where he has a soft bed, toys, food, water, shelter, and lots of love. He's a big loveable boy who likes to talk to you and bat at you with his paw if you stop petting him.

Throughout all of this, he continues to wag his tail and charm everyone he meets.

Will's care is going to take considerable time and many visits to the vet. The bone fragment could not be located with the initial x-rays which were taken from the side. In order to have an x-ray taken from the top, we would need to bring him to the University of Minnesota’s School of Veterinary medicine. Under their specialized care, we would hope to find out where the bone fragment is, if there is any more damage, have it surgically removed, etc.
