Collie Health

The Collie's health is about in the middle of the various breeds with several fairly common inheritable diseases. Skin and eye problems, seizures, allergies, Dermatomyositis (DM),  Collie Nose, hypothyroidism, heart disease, bloat, and poor temperament (most often excessive shyness) are some common troubles. A Collie from a good breeder or rescuer should have been checked for the most likely and obvious problems, but if you have any questions, get them answered before adopting!

Overly aggressive temperaments are rare in Collies but they do sometimes occur. Because of the dangers to humans, a Collie that is known to bite aggressively usually should never be permitted to be adopted unless you plan to spend time with a professional behaviorist.  There are so many excellent Collies available that you should not consider a 'doubtful' one if you have kids or are a beginner dog owner.

The normal lifespan for a Collie is between 10-12 years, but they have been known to live up to 16 years or more with good care.
